Create assets

    The Autodesk Inventor Factory Design Utility provides users with predefined system content that is included with the product. The Create Asset command enables you to create new, or use, existing data. The data is authored and published into a User Assets library, with the provided system content.

    What type of content can be used to create assets?

    Standard Inventor parts and assemblies can be created and used as content for a factory library, or you can import existing Inventor part and assembly files.

    Can imported data from other CAD products be used to build content?

    Content in the Factory Assets library can be parameterized to capture its intent in the Factory Layout assembly. Therefore, the data that drives it must contain the necessary parameters. The import process creates base features in Inventor that are representative of the geometry and topology in the source file. You can use Inventor commands to adjust the base features and add new features; however, you cannot modify or parameterize the base feature.     Create assets

    Create a part file as factory content

    1. If you are working in a Factory Layout, click Factory tab ac.menuaro.gif Assets panel ac.menuaro.gif Create Asset af_create_asset_icon.pngand select Model as Part.
    2. If you are not working in a Factory Layout, click Get Started tab ac.menuaro.gif Factory Launch panel ac.menuaro.gif Create Asset af_create_asset_icon.png and select Model as Part.
    3. Model the new part geometry using standard Inventor commands. For help modeling part geometry in Inventor, review the MindTouch and MindTouch Help topics.

      Tip: When modeling the part geometry, consider which features will be parameterized when the model is authored as factory content. In the parameters dialog box, check the Key column for any parameters that will be changed.

    4. Once the part is complete, click Environments tab ac.menuaro.gif Factory panel ac.menuaro.gif Asset Builder to author the file for use as factory content.

    Create an assembly file as factory content

    A new assembly model can be created for use as factory content.

    1. If you are working in a Factory Layout, click Factory tab ac.menuaro.gif Assets panel ac.menuaro.gif Create Asset af_create_asset_icon.png and select Model as Assembly.
    2. If you are not working in a Factory Layout, on the ribbon, click Get Started tab ac.menuaro.gif Factory Launch panel ac.menuaro.gifCreate Asset af_create_asset_icon.png and select Model as Assembly.
    3. Model the new assembly geometry using standard Inventor commands. For help modeling assemblies in Inventor, review the MindTouch.

      Tip: When creating the assembly, consider which parameters can be modified when the content is authored as factory content. In the parameters dialog box, check the Key column for any parameters that will be changed.

    4. Once the assembly is complete, click Environments tab ac.menuaro.gif Factory panel ac.menuaro.gif Asset Builder to author the file for use as factory content.

    Use an existing part or assembly file as factory content

    1. If you are working in a layout file, click Factory tab ac.menuaro.gif Assets panel ac.menuaro.gif Create Asset af_create_asset_icon.png and select Import Asset.
    2. If you are not working in a layout file, on the ribbon, click Get Started tab ac.menuaro.gif Factory Launch panel ac.menuaro.gif Create Asset af_create_asset_icon.png and select Import Asset.
    3. Navigate to and open an existing part or assembly file.
    4. Continue to model the part or assembly file, as necessary.

      Tip: Ensure that the part or assembly contains all necessary data so that it can be parameterized when authored as factory content.

    5. Once the part or assembly design is complete, click Environments tab ac.menuaro.gif Factory panel ac.menuaro.gif Asset Builder to begin authoring the file for use as factory content.

    Factory content can be newly modeled part or assembly files, or you can import existing content.

    Model as Part This command provides a streamlined version of the Inventor New command. Click Model as Part to create an empty part file. The command does not prompt you to select a template file or enter a name for the file. The part is created based on the default part template (Standard.ipt) specified in the Factory Options dialog box and with a default name (Part1, Part2, and so on). The Sketch tab is immediately activated and you can begin creation of the new component for the factory library. Once the part design is complete, click Environments tab ac.menuaro.gif Factory panel ac.menuaro.gif Asset Builder to author the file for use as factory content.
    Model as Assembly This command provides a streamlined version of the Inventor New command. Click Model as Assembly to create an empty assembly file. The command does not prompt you to select a template file or enter a name for the file. The assembly is created based on the default assembly template (Standard.iam) specified in the Factory Options dialog box and with a default name (Assembly1, Assembly2, and so on). The Assemble tab is immediately activated and you can begin creation of the new assembly component for the factory library. Once the assembly design is complete, click Environments tab ac.menuaro.gif Factory panel ac.menuaro.gif Asset Builder to author the file for use as factory content.
    Import Content This command provides you with a method for opening an existing Inventor part or assembly file so that it can be authored as factory content. To open a file, navigate to the file location, select the file name, and click Open in the Import Asset dialog box. You can continue to design the model using standard Inventor commands or click Environments tab ac.menuaro.gif Factory panel ac.menuaro.gif Asset Builder to author the file.
