Adjust Orientation

The Adjust Orientation feature is used to modify the direction of a plastic part.

The default direction of the mold opening aligns with the positive Z axis. Because many plastic part models are built randomly, the direction of the plastic part and the direction of the mold opening are often different. The Adjust Orientation feature is used to adjust these two directions so they are consistent.

The methods available to modify the direction of plastic parts are:

    • Rotate the plastic part.
    • Align the edge, or the normal direction of the selected surface, with the positive Z axis.

When a plastic part is placed, an associated Orientation node is generated automatically. This node cannot be deleted.

Adjust Orientation, Pattern, and Adjust Position

    Adjust Orientation

Changes the direction of a plastic part in the mold. The result is expressed only on the MP assembly. It does not affect the coordinate system of the mold design assembly.

    Adjust Position

Changes the position of a part, relative to another part or axis.

    Pattern

Provides rich methods for positioning and orienting parts in a mold containing multiple parts.

    Procedures

    Adjust Orientation

You can adjust the direction of a plastic part by rotating the part around an axis. You can also align the part relative to an edge or planar surface.

    Rotate around an axis

    1. In the Mold Layout tab, or the Core/Cavity tab, click Adjust Orientation.
    2. Select a plastic part in the graphics window.
Note If a part node is activated in the Mold Design browser, the corresponding part is automatically selected in the graphics window.
    3. In the Adjust Orientation dialog box, select the Rotate around Axis method.
    4. Select the X, Y, or Z axis as the rotation axis.
    5. Enter a rotation angle.
    6. Click Apply or Done.

Align with an edge or surface

    1. In the Mold Layout tab, or the Core/Cavity tab, click Adjust Orientation.
    2. Select a plastic part in the graphics window.
NoteIf a part node is activated in the Mold Design browser, the corresponding part is automatically selected in the graphics window.
    3. In the Adjust Orientation dialog box, select the Align with Axis method.
    4. Select the X, Y, or Z axis as the reference axis.
    5. Select an edge, or a planar surface on the selected part in the graphics window. The direction of the part changes according to the specified axis and edge or surface.
    6. If necessary, click Flip plastic part to reverse the direction of the part.
    7. Click Done.

    Edit orientation

    1. In the Mold Design browser, under a plastic part node, right-click the Orientation node, and then click Edit Feature.
    2. In the Adjust Orientation dialog box, modify the settings.
    3. Click Done.

Change the direction of a plastic part in the mold.

    Plastic Part

In the graphics window, select a part.

    Method
    Rotate around Axis

Rotates the plastic part through the specified angle about the X, Y, or Z axis.

    Align with Axis

Aligns a selected edge, or the normal of a selected surface, with the specified axis.

    Rotation

Uses the X axis of the plastic part coordinate system as the reference.

Uses the Y axis of the plastic part coordinate system as the reference.

Uses the Z axis of the plastic part coordinate system as the reference.

    Rotation Angle

Enter the angle of rotation for the plastic part.

Applies the rotation to the plastic part without closing the dialog box.

    Align

Uses the X axis of the plastic part coordinate system as the reference.

Uses the Y axis of the plastic part coordinate system as the reference.

Uses the Z axis of the plastic part coordinate system as the reference.

    Select edge or surface

Select an edge or planar surface on the plastic part in the graphics window.

    Flip moldable part

Reverses the direction of the plastic part.
