When you create or edit a grounded work point in a part or 3D sketch, you activate the 3D Move/Rotate command. When the triad is displayed, select or drag a triad segment to indicate the type of transform you want or click it to open a dialog box. In the dialog box, you can enter coordinates to position a grounded work point precisely.
In addition to entering coordinates, you can drag the triad. X, Y, and Z coordinates dynamically update in the dialog box.
In the following image, the 3D Move/Rotate command is used to move a work point consumed by a Loft to Point feature.
You are not limited to movement parallel to the part axes. You can rotate the 3D Move/Rotate command about any axis to realign the direction of subsequent moves.

What do the colors refer to on the 3D Move/Rotate triad?
Because you can rotate the triad command, the colors help you identify axes. The colors correspond to the default colors of the principle part axes:
- Red is the X axis.
- Green is the Y axis.
- Blue is the Z axis.
If you customize system colors or the triad colors, the colors might not match the part axes.
As you rotate the triad, it no longer matches the part axes. You can always tell what the principle axes are by looking in the lower left corner of the graphics window.
What do the triad sections mean?
When you first activate the triad, its origin sphere is coincident with the geometry where you want to place or edit a grounded work point. Click a triad section or drag to indicate the type of transform you want. The 3D Move/Rotate dialog box opens showing the context of your selected transform. As you select other parts of the triad, you can drag or enter precise coordinates or angles corresponding to your selection.
Move the triad and the selected work point along the axis.
Rotate the triad and the selected work point around the axis.
Move the triad and selected work point in the selected plane.
Allows unrestricted movement in the view plane. Drag in the active view plane or enter coordinates in any direction. After you enter coordinates in the dialog box, you cannot drag because the triad is not in the active view plane.
NoteWhen the Move Triad Only option is selected, the work point does not move.
How can I realign or reposition the triad axes?
To reset the triad orientation, follow this sequence:
- Right-click a grounded work point , and then select 3D Move/Rotate.
- Click the triad to open the dialog box. Click Redefine alignment or position command, then:
- Click a triad axis, and then click an edge, work axis, or sketch line.
- Click a triad plane, and then click a face or work plane.
Click the triad sphere, and then click a vertex , edge midpoint , work point, or sketch point to reposition.
How can I rotate a work point to different coordinates?
To move a grounded work point relative to a different location, use the Move Triad Only option of the 3D Move or Rotate command. On the ribbon, use to create a work point, then follow this sequence:
- Right-click the grounded work point and select 3D Move/Rotate to edit the grounded work point.
- Click the arrowhead of the X axis, for example, to open the dialog box.
- Right-click, select Move Triad Only, and then drag the triad to a new location.
- Right-click and select Apply. The work point and the triad are separated.
- Right-click and clear the check mark on Move Triad Only so that you can move or rotate the work point and triad together.
- Click the shaft of the Y or Z axis, for example, and drag around the selected axis. Both the triad and the work point rotate together.
- Right-click and select Apply.
If appropriate, you can use commands on the 3D Move/Rotate dialog box instead of context menu options.
Can I change a grounded work point to ungrounded?
You can ground an associative (parametric) work point, and then unground it if the point is not moved. If you move the point using the triad, you cannot change it back to an associative work point.
3D Move or Rotate
Interactively positions grounded work points by dragging the triad in a planar move, axial move or rotate, free movement, or entering values along X, Y, or Z axes. Movement is controlled by the selected area of the triad.
On the ribbon, select , and then click a vertex, edge midpoint, sketch point, or work point. Click the triad to show dialog box.
In the Part browser, right-click a feature, and select Move Feature. In the graphics window, right-click and select Triad Move.
Select triad segment Values are relative to the selected geometry. Express values as numeric values, parameters, or expressions.
Move along X, Y, or Z axis
When a triad arrowhead is selected, drag or enter a value in the corresponding axis area.
Rotate around X, Y, or Z axis
When a triad axis is selected, drag or enter an angle.
When the triad sphere is selected, drag in the active view plane or enter values in X, Y, and Z axes. After you enter coordinates in the dialog box, you cannot drag the triad because it is not in the active view plane.
Move in plane
When a plane on the triad is selected, drag or enter values in the selected plane.
Move triad only
Select to move the triad only. The work point or feature position is unchanged. Clear the check mark to move the triad and the work point or feature together.
Redefine alignment or position Activates the X, Y, and Z edit boxes. You can enter new coordinates to redefine the triad alignment or position. The triad moves to the newly entered coordinates.
Move the 3D triad:
- Click a triad axis, and click an edge, work axis, or sketch line.
- Click a triad plane, and click a face or work plane.
- Click the triad sphere, and click a vertex, edge midpoint, work point, or sketch point to reposition.
Apply places a grounded work point at the position of the triad, either by clicking with the cursor or to apply entered coordinates. A grounded work point is placed each time you click Apply.
Undo reverses the last placed point and moves the triad to the previous position.
