How to add your knowledge

Migrate Files

    Table of contents
    1. 1. Purge Task

Use the Migrate Files task to migrate your files after installing a new release of Autodesk Inventor.

When selecting files to migrate, you can select files outside of or within the Vault:

    • Specific files.
    • All files in a directory including subfolders.
    • All files referenced by an assembly
    • All files in an Autodesk Inventor project.

You can add files from a remote server or remote workstation. Use a unique UNC path, such as \\server_name\our_folders. Avoid using different drive mappings or different UNC paths to the same file.

If you select a project that has a style library, any unused styles are removed during the migration process.

    Tips

    • You can run the Purge task to do a full purge on your data. A purge cleans out the styles that did not match the style library.
    • You can migrate drawing files in a defer-update state. Set this option manually in the Drawing Settings dialog box to allow updates to continue.
    • In the migration options, use Total Rebuild to ultimately increase the performance of the Inventor application.
    • To ensure the full benefit of memory saving mode, migrate all of your R10 and earlier files using Task Scheduler.

    Guidelines and recommendations

    • Back up all Autodesk Inventor files before you migrate them. Maintain the original directory structure in your backup so that you can restore files if necessary.
    • If you migrate specific files, follow this migration order, since assemblies depend on parts, and drawings can depend on both parts and assemblies:

      1. Parts
      2. Subassemblies
      3. Assemblies
      4. Presentations
      5. Drawings
    • Certain types of files are skipped during migration:
      • Read-only
      • Previously migrated
      • Built in non production versions of Autodesk Inventor, such as in a Beta version
      • Files with missing references
    • Autodesk Inventor must be authorized on your system before you run the migration task.

    Procedures

    Migrate Files

    Before you begin

    1. Back up all files used in your designs: part (.ipt), assembly (.iam), presentation (.ipn), drawing (.idw, .dwg), and iFeatures (.ide).
    2. To access files stored on a server, you can map the network drive locally or user UNC path directly.
    3. Verify that your files resolve and open correctly in the existing version of Autodesk Inventor. Repair resolution and general problems before you proceed.
    4. If you defined one or more custom projects instead of using the Default project, complete the following steps:
      • Start your new version of Autodesk Inventor.
      • On the ribbon, click Tools tab Options panel Application Options Files tab.
      • In Projects Folder, verify that the appropriate project is specified.
      • Close the dialog box. On the Get Started tab, Launch panel, click Projects. The projects dialog box lists your projects and guarantees that the project file is available in the migration dialog box.
    5. Close all versions of Autodesk Inventor.

    Migration Procedure

    1. In the Autodesk Inventor Task Scheduler window, click Migrate Files.

The information in the task list switches accordingly, and shows any migrate files tasks you saved previously.

    2. In the Autodesk Inventor Task Scheduler window, right-click and select Create Task Migrate Files.
    3. In the Migrate Files dialog box, in Project, specify the active project.

If a vault project is active, then files are migrated from the vault. If a non vault project is active, then files are migrated from the local hard drive.

    4. Click Add Files, Add Folder, or Add Project.

Add Files: Browse to and select individual files.

Add Folder: To include subfolders, click to place a check mark in the Recursive column. In the File Name Column, click the down arrow to specify one or more of the file types within the folder to migrate.

Add Project: Migrates all legacy files within the project you specify. If a project you select has a style library, unused styles with the same name or value as the style of the project are purged before the migrated files are saved. This process removes most unused styles from your migrated part and assembly files, assuming that most styles were never modified.

    5. If necessary, repeat the steps to add more files and folders.
    6. Click Options. If you do not set the options, a default set of options is used, including:
      • Total Rebuild - Off.

Turn on this option to enhance the performance of the Inventor application.

      • Skip Migrated Files - On in Migrate Files, Off in Update Design.
    7. In the Task Properties box, enter a task name and a time-out threshold.
    8. Specify a schedule, or select the Immediately option.
NoteYou can use the Task Scheduler while you run Autodesk Inventor. For optimal performance, close all Autodesk Inventor sessions before you run a task and do not start a session while a task is running.
    9. In Log File, leave the check box selected for the default located in Documents and Settings\(user name)\Local Settings\Temp\Task Scheduler.log

      or

      • Enter a file name to overwrite the default. If the log file does not exist, a log file unique to the task is created.
      • Click Browse to find and select an existing file.
      • To specify no log file, clear the check box.
    10. In the Migrate Files dialog box, click OK.

If it is the first task you create during the current session, the Authentication dialog box is displayed. Enter your Microsoft Windows log in name and password.

The task is displayed in the task list. You can close the Autodesk Inventor Task Scheduler window. The task runs as scheduled.

The log file reflects the success or problems in the migration.

    Increase performance in file migration

This method takes longer than selecting an entire project at a time for migration. However, it is more efficient. It loads each part and subassembly into memory one by one before freeing up the memory for the item. The software can open files without migrating them, so it reduces the time to open an assembly model.

    1. NoteTo ensure the full benefit of memory saving mode, migrate all of your R10 and earlier files using Task Scheduler.
On the Start menu, click Programs Autodesk Autodesk Inventor [version] Tools Task Scheduler.
    2. In the Autodesk Inventor Task Scheduler window, click Migrate Files.
    3. In the Autodesk Inventor Task Scheduler window, right-click and select Create Task Migrate Files.
    4. In the Migrate Files dialog box, in Project, specify the active project.

If a vault project is active, then files are migrated from the vault. If a non vault project is active, then files are migrated from the local hard drive.

    5. Click Add Folder to migrate two or more part (.ipt) files.

To include subfolders, click to place a check mark in the Recursive column. In the File Name Column, click the down arrow to specify the file type within the folder to migrate.

    6. Repeat the previous steps for all of the subassemblies (not the main assembly).
    7. Repeat the steps for the main assembly.
    8. Then repeat the steps for the drawing (.idw) and presentation (.ipn) files.
    9. Select the files in your migration list, and click Options.
      • Turn on Total Rebuild.
      • Turn on Skip Migrated Files.
    10. In the Task Properties box, enter a task name and a time-out threshold.
    11. Specify a schedule, or select the Immediately option.
NoteFor optimal performance, close all Autodesk Inventor sessions before you run your task. Do not start a session while a task is running.

    13. Click OK.

If it is the first task you create during the current session, the Authentication dialog box displays. Enter your Microsoft Windows log in name and password.

The task is displayed in the task list. You can close the Autodesk Inventor Task Scheduler window. The task runs as scheduled.

The log file reflects the success or problems in the migration.

Migrating just the main assembly, the software loads every part and subassembly separately into memory, including recurring parts and patterned assemblies. This technique can result in out of memory and stability issues with large assemblies. Windows on a 32-bit operating system can allocate a maximum of only 2 GB of memory to each CPU process. This 2 GB limit can be spread over RAM or the pagefile. Large assemblies with component patterns can produce major issues.
