Part and assembly files from other CAD systems can be imported for use in Inventor Fusion. The import operation does not maintain associativity with the original file. Changes to the original file after the import operation do not affect the imported part or assembly. Likewise, changes to the imported part or assembly do not affect the original file.

When assemblies are imported, Inventor Fusion attempts to preserve the assembly and subassembly structure of the original file. However, for SAT files, the subassembly structure is decomposed so that all subassembly parts become components of the top-level assembly.

The import process creates base features in Inventor Fusion representative of the geometry and topology in the source file. You can use Inventor Fusion commands to adjust the base features and add new features to the Inventor Fusion feature tree.

Import Data from other CAD systems

You can import data in the following file formats:

DWG
IPT
IAM
SAT
STP, STEP

To import files into Inventor Fusion

Expand the Application Menu then select Open.
In the Open dialog box, select the file type in the Files of Type pulldown.
Browse to and select the file to import.
Click Open to import the file.

tomMon Sep 3, 2012 11:12 amGreat program but I am having problems importing drawings from Adobe Illustrator CS3 (exported as DWG files). Inventor Fusion, upon a PLACE or OPEN command returns an error "load DWG file failed". I have tried several export settings and have even tried placing "simple objects" (no compound paths, etc.). Is this a situation with CS3 or with Fusion? Any thoughts would be helpful.

There is a post in the discussion forums related to this. The suggestion there is that DWG files created from CS3 often require clean up in AutoCAD before using them in a 3D application (Fusion). The URL for the post is below:

javieraparicioMon Sep 10, 2012 8:10 amI am trying to import an Inventor file... extension ".ipt" from a supplier and when I follow given instructions above a message windows pops up stating:
"X11 must be installed to open Inventor files. You an download it directly from http://xquartz.macosforge.org."
And then only gives me the choice to select "OK".

I thought the intent is for Inventor Fusion to be able to play seamlessly with sister software from Autodesk like Inventor & AutoCAD 2013 for Mac... which by the way I am in the process of evaluating (AutoCAD for Mac that is and eventually Inventor when it becomes available for Mac) for my company. Also perplexed at the need to install other software that I've never heard about and for which after going to that website doesn't make sense why it would be needed.

Someone please give me direction on how to open an Inventor file.

I checked with our developers and this is what I was told:

...for our TP1 release we require X11 to be installed in order to open Inventor files. The technology we use to open them is dependent on X11. Prior to Mountain Lion, X11 was installed as part of the OS. So you will have to install X11 in order to translate IPT files. We hope to resolve this for future releases. Thanks.

You would have to save the CATIA file as a neutral format such as STEP or SAT. Then you can import that file.

I am opening a file created in AutoCad 2013 for mac in Inventor Fusion 2013 for mac and the size of the object changes.
I have had this with STP files before, but i didn't think it would happen between Autodesk programs. Its about 1/3 the size.

I am fairly new to Inventor fusion and the only thing i can think it might be is the file was created originally in inches and not mm. However i didnt think this would matter.....
I do not have any problems opening the file, and i'm opening it in the same manor as i would any other files.

Its a bit weird.

Also Inventor fusion crashes a lot on me (a few times a day at least) i am using a 15" mac book pro 2.7Ghz I7 with 8gb Ram and the recommended AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB graphics card. There does not seem to be a trend when crashing, sometimes its when completing complex tasks, and other times simply moving an object.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Your description of the issue with STP and DWG files does sound related to units. If the units in the DWG or STP are set to inches and Fusion is set to mm, then Fusion will scale the geometry accordingly. Ideally, you would set this in the authoring application (UNITS command in AutoCAD).

For the crashing, I don't have a specific fix. Your systems seems appropriate for Fusion. I would recommend submitting the error report that is displayed and give as specific a description as possible. This are reviewed and addressed whenever possible. Many of the drawings are sent to me from my US office (exported in Inches). Do i have to open all the files convert them to mm and the re-save them before opening in Fusion? it seems a little longwinded especially if i get complex drawings.

Overall i honestly think this is a fantastic program, that is incredibly versatile. Your speed and support is also very praiseworthy. Thank you.
