The local servers you install will communicate with the central server.
The local server installation process is nearly identical to the central Revit Server installation. The primary difference is that the installer prompts you to specify a central server to be used with the local server. You do not need to have the actual central server service installed and running. You only need to know where the central server will be hosted (that is, the host server's network name) so that the environment variable used by the local server to identify the central server is set correctly.
If users are at the same site as the central server, there is no need to install a separate local server at that site. For this configuration, install the central server, and then specify the central server from the Revit application.
Note You must allow ICMP requests from clients and from the local server to pass through the firewall to the central server.
To install local servers
- If you have not already done so, install and configure the Revit Server prerequisites.
- On the installation page, select Install Tools & Utilities and accept the license agreement.
- On the Configure Installation page, note that there are checkboxes next to components that are selected. If you do not wish to install these components, click the related checkboxes so they are no longer selected.
- Select the Revit Server checkbox (this is not selected by default).
- Move the cursor over install Revit Server to enable server-based worksharing over the WAN, and select Click to open and configure.
Note If you do not open the configuration page, and then select Install, a central server with the default path locations is created.
- Under Server Type, select Local server.
- Specify the central server to which the local server will connect.
Note If the Central Server IP address or name field becomes available, there is no projects directory field.
- (optional) Under Cache folders, you can change the folder path. If you change the drive, it must have the appropriate access rights so the Revit Server can successfully write to it. For best results, set access rights to give full control to the SYSTEM, Administrators, and CREATOR OWNER users for the Revit Server's cache and project folders (including sub-folders and files).
- Select Click to close and return to product list to close this page.
- If the central server is not installed, a warning displays. Click OK to close the warning and return to the installation.
- Select Install.
