Shared Parameters

Shared parameters are parameters that you can add to families or projects and then share with other families and projects. They give you the ability to add specific data that is not already predefined in the family file or the project template.

Shared parameters are particularly useful when you want to create a schedule that displays various family categories; without a shared parameter, you cannot do this. If you create a shared parameter and add it to the desired family categories, you can then create a schedule with these categories. This is called creating a multi-category schedule in Revit.

Shared parameters are stored in a file independent of any family file or Revit project; this allows you to access the file from different families or projects.

Project parameters are parameters you define and then add to multiple categories of elements in a project. They are specific to the project and cannot be shared with other projects. You can then use those project parameters in multi-category or single-category schedules.
This conflicts with the definition above for Shared Parameters. What is really correct?
paulaplMon Mar 19, 2012 1:15 pmThank you for raising this important question. I will update the learning content to clarify that shared and project parameters can be used in schedules, and explain under what recommended circumstances each is used. I hope the following addresses your concern.

You can create a schedule that displays various family categories with a common parameter using a project parameter AND/OR a shared parameter. An important distinction is that shared parameters have to be used if the information is needed for a tag, or if you want to have a more consistent list of parameters used on your projects and families.

Project parameters are unique to the specific project and are added to categories of objects in the project. These project parameters can then be shown in a schedule.

Shared parameters are created from an external list (TXT file). This list allows for consistent parameter naming across multiple projects. Because shared parameters are on an external list, they can also be added to families and tags. Shared parameters can then also be shown in schedules.
