| change the preview of the material appearance | For Swatch shape and render quality, select the desired scene from the Options drop-down. The preview is a rendered image of the material. Updating the preview takes a moment while Revit renders the preview scene. |
| reference an appearance property set | For Properties, select By Property Set. Then specify to create or reference an existing property set. See Searching for a Property Set. |
| keep the material appearance properties independent of a property set | For Properties, select Independent. Then edit the properties as desired. |
| change the render quality | Click Options drop-down and select Draft, Medium or Production Quality. |
| align the texture of the render appearance to the surface pattern of the material | Click Texture Alignment on the Graphics tab. See Texture Alignment for further instructions. |
| change the appearance properties | In the lower part of the Appearance tab, change property values. The properties vary depending on the type of material. See Appearance Properties. NoteThe appearance properties can affect the amount of time required to render an image. See Render Performance and Materials. |
Textures add the realism of details to a material.
Reflectivity maps simulate a scene reflected on the surface of a shiny object.
Transparency maps create the effect of transparency and opacity.
Cutouts maps make the material partially transparent.
Self illumination maps make portions of an object appear to glow.
A bump map simulates a bumpy or irregular surface.
