You may notice that by default when you export to CAD in Revit 2012, the phase status is not included.
For example, in Revit 2011 if the Phase Created of a wall is set to Existing, when you export to CAD it is placed on the A-WALL-EXST layer. Export the same existing wall in Revit 2012 and you notice the wall geometry is placed on the A-WALL layer.
In Revit 2012 you can modify the export setup, and include the phase modifier by doing the following:
R > Export > Options > Export Setups DWG/DXF > Add/Edit Modifiers for All… > add {Phase Status} > OK > OK
Now when you export to CAD the phase status will be included, in this case A-WALL-EXST:

-- Kevin Dolley, Autodesk Revit User Experience Team - How do I control what text is added for each phase. "EXST", "DEMO" are not a US NCS compliant phase status indicators; "E" and "D" are, and I would like to be able to add "N" for new construction.
- The text used for the layer modifiers can be set in the Export setup dialog. In the default template for 2014 the modifiers are setup to use -D, -E, -N as modifiers. it may not be that way in the 2012 templates. To change the value, scroll to the bottom of the export setup dialog and there you will see the modifiers section. Under {Phase Status} you should be able to put whatever value you would like to use.
