The creation of heat as a result of shear stress in flow; also called frictional heating.

Shear heating is caused by friction between adjacent laminae moving at different speeds. The layers of melt that are nearer to the wall to attain a higher temperature than the core. This effect can be used to advantage in the design of parts with thin walls when premature freezing is a risk.
