@lanl, thanks for the clarifications and edits. That helps.
@pvillella, if you use the new information, do the instructions now make sense to you and work for you?

This method works for both family and in place component, but their family category has to be Structural Framing, Structural Column, Structural Foundation, Generic Model, Wall, Floor, Roof, and Ceiling which is mentined in the "Note" part at the end of this tip. I will set the "Note" part as bold style, and attach a new image which will help users notice this. So for in place component counter-top, it would be better that set it as Generic Model category when creating it in project. thanks a lot.
"view filter requires at least one category" error is a known issue of Revit Structure, and it has been reported to development team.
If there is no filters created in the project before use "Save" selection function, in visibility /graphic override dialog, click Filters tab, click "Edit/New" to open the Filters dialog
,click Add button, error message shows "view filter requires at least one category".
Workaround: Before using "Save" selection function, make sure your project file has a "Criteria-based" filter created by View tab>Graphics panel>Filters, select "Define Criteria". Meanwhile, in VG dialog, click "Edit/New" to open the filters dialog, always keep the "Criteria-based" filter selected when creating a new filter, otherwise, the error message will show up again.
