Adding centerlines by individually selecting features in a drawing view can be a time consuming and tedious process. There is a much easier tool, called Automated Centerlines, which will save you valuable time. Many users do not know of this tool as it is not an icon in the Ribbon interface. Let’s review how to use Automated Centerlines with a simple example video.

Here we have already created a drawing in Inventor with a base and cross sectional view.

Right-click on the view in the drawing and select Automated Centerlines.

Tip: Multiple views can be selected by holding down the <CTRL> or <Shift> key while selecting views on the drawing.

The Automated Centerlines dialog appears allowing you control over which types of features to consider in the selected view, normal and parallel geometry projection and thresholds for radius and arc angle values.

You can set up default criteria for adding automated centerlines to selected drawing views in the Tools tab, in the Options panel, click Document Settings, Drawing tab. All new drawings will use these criteria if you set and save them in the drawing template file.
