| Delete | Delete is unavailable for some Elements in a Revit Family You are editing a family file and select elements to delete. You notice the Delete tool is grayed out; you cannot delete these elements in the family. How did the family get to this current state? By default if you start a new family file, add some elements, save the family, navigate to the family file, and rename the extension from .RFA [Family File] to .RFT [Family Template File] the elements you added in that file will now be locked from deletion if you create a new family from this template. Or simply take an existing family and rename the extension using the same process as above. What if you need to delete these elements? When considered a template and you start a new family file from this template, the elements from the template will be locked from deletion. If you simply make a copy of the file, and rename the extension back to .RFA, you can open the file normally and delete any of these elements. If needed you could rename the extension back to .RFT afterward to set it back as a family template. | |||||

| FAMILY | 3 types- System, Loadable, In-place | |||||
| System familiescreate basic building elements such as walls, roofs, ceilings, floors, and other elements that you would assemble on a construction site. System settings, which affect the project environment and include types for levels, grids, drawing sheets, and viewports, are also system families.Can Duplicate or create Types... Cannot Create New !! | ||||||
| Loadable familiesare families used to create both building components and some annotation elements. Loadable families create the building components that would usually be purchased, delivered, and installed in and around a building, such as windows, doors, casework, fixtures, furniture, and planting. They also include some annotation elements that are routinely customized, such as symbols and titleblocks. One Can Create NewLoadable Family, DuplicateLoadable Family or create Typesof a Loadable Family to cater to Variation in size/ finish!! | ||||||
| In-place elementsare unique elements that you create when you need to create a unique component that is specific to the current project. You can create in-place geometry so that it references other project geometry, resizing or adjusting accordingly if the referenced geometry changes. | Import 'Survey Drawing', always with Units Set to 'Meters'. Define the 'Project North'& 'True North' Before Importing. | ||||||
| Positioning:- Auto- Centre to Centre:- Works fine. Brings the objects in the centre of Revit Space. | ||||||
| Positioning:- Auto- Origin to Origin:- Doesn't work for dwgs where the object is more than 20 miles from the autocad origin. | ||||||
| Positioning:- Auto- By Shared Coordinates:- Doesn't work for dwgs where the object's coordinates are bigger than 20 miles distance. Works fine for 'Survey Drawings' because these are drawn in 'Meters'. That’s why we must always use 'Meters' units while importing/ linking Survey Drawings (with correct North Settings) | ||||||
| Positioning:- Manual- Origin:- Works fine, except where the object is more than 20 miles from the autocad origin. | ||||||
| Positioning:- Manual- Base Point:- Works exceptionally fine for dwgs where objects are more than 20 miles from the autocad origin (due to their correct coordinates or whatever). First, Use 'Base' command in autocad to establish a 'Base Point' on the drawing, it could be the survey point or any other point. Then use this Base Point to Place the Drawing Maually everytime one imports. | ||||||
| Positioning:- Manual- Centre:- Works fine where the centre of the drawing is specifically important. | ||||||

| FAMILY | sliding door family. 1. Create a Door Panel with simple Height & Width parameter 2. Make both the parameters 'Shared' 3. Create a new 'door family' 4. use 'load family' tool & load the 'door panel' into this new door family 5. Create a formula for the 'door panel width' & 'door panel height' 6. always consider the centre to centre distance only, when calculating the distance. (e.g.- panel width for 4-panel sliding door with frame can be calculated as (Width-2*Frame-door frame)/4 + door frame 7. select the 'door panel'< Edit Types 8. Click on 'panel width' & 'panel height', both should be shared parameters 9. Remember: to change anything within the door panel family, select the door & click on 'Edit Type' & to change anything in the sliding door family, just click on the 'Family Types' icon. | |||||
| Adding a 'Detail Component' inside the Family !! E.g.- Adding a Door handle as a Detail Component…Always use Separate Ref. Planes & Separate Parameters to Tie down the location of Detail Component… A Detail Component Doesn’t Move with other objects automatically !! | ||||||
| Always use 'Shared Parameter' inside the family. Shared Parameters can be scheduled in a table. E.g.- Glass thickness in the Doors & Windows can be tabulated using Shared Parameter. | ||||||
| Revit Visibility Hierarchy | Revit gives the user a number of ways to override the display of an element. It may not always be clear which method “wins” over another method, but there is a visibility hierarchy. This list may not cover every possible scenario but does include common overrides. 10 being the lowest and 1 being the highest using walls as an example: 1. Line Work Tool 2. Override Graphics in View > By Element > Halftone 3. Graphic Display Options – Silhouette Edges 4. Override Graphics in View > By Element 5. View Filters 6. View Depth – “Beyond” Line Style 7. Phasing Graphic Overrides 8. Visibility / Graphic Overrides > Override Host Layers > Cut Line Styles 9. Visibility / Graphic Overrides > Projection \ Cut Lines 10. Project Object Styles |
