| Inventor | Wires and Cables | patrick.miller | IcoCable,
If you do not require the actual twisted geometry, you can use the wire and/or cable commands and add a style to the library so your bill of materials is correct. If you require the actual geometry, there is not a command in Cable and Harness for that. There are posts in the discussion groups related to using the coil feature for this, but it will be complex if you need to bend it.

| Inventor | Constrain Cylindrical Components | patrick.miller | nondeduvel,
In this assembly, the lock pins are instances of the same part so any changes to one will be reflected in the other whether that's changing geometry or adding work features. If you did not want this, then you would have to save a copy of the lock pin then replace one of the instances. Patrick Miller

| Inventor | Drawings | aragorn_66 | Hi got a big problem!
I was making a project and when I opened *.idw file put everything I needed into that file and wanted to print it. | Inventor | Wires and Cables | IdoCable | Does anyone know the step-by-step commands to make a twisted pair/triad/quad of wires? | Tue Apr 24, 2012 3:11 pm |
| Inventor | Nested Flexible Sketch Blocks | IdoCable | 8. Double clicking on Screw Rod Assy under the Blocks folder selects the instances that were dropped into the graphics window. Everything else disappears (not just grayed out). 13. Although I have used the Collinear Constraint on the centerlines for the Worm Gear Assy and Connecting Rod, the constraint glyphs to not appear when Show All Constraints is activated. Four instances of the Perpendicular Constraint do show, but no Collinear Constraint glyphs are visible. 15. Moving the Connecting Rod cannot be performed until editing the block is finished. Attempting to move the Worm Gear Assy (before editing is finished) results in the outline of the Worm Gear Assy moving, but not the interior circles or points. Step 16 MUST be completed before Step 15. 18. After applying the Coincident Constraint, right-click in the graphics window, and select the green check mark (OK). If the Coincident Constraint command is not ended, the blocks can not be moved at all. 20. Flexible for the Screw Rod Assy cannot be selected under the Block folder. When Flexible for Screw Rod Assy:1 is selected, both the Screw Rod Assy:1 AND the Link Plate move. Flexible for Link Plate is not selected. The Pivot Plate remains in its original position. Is it possible to move Screw Rod Assy:1 without also moving Link Plate? When Flexible for Screw Rod Assy:2 is selected, Screw Rod Assy:2 moves as expected, and nothing else moves. | Tue Apr 24, 2012 12:14 pm |
| Inventor | Format Sketch Blocks | IdoCable | Step 5: The color for Worm Gear Assy:2 instance would not change until I clicked on Worm Gear Assy under the Blocks folder. | Tue Apr 24, 2012 11:24 am |

| Inventor | Work with Parameters | mbunting2012@gmail.com | Inventor cannot link spreadsheets via Microsoft Excel Starter (2010) -- it must link spreadsheets via a fully-functional version of Microsoft Excel. The reason has to do with the way by which Inventor searches for the Excel file on your computer's registry. Otherwise, you will receive an error message saying "Not implemented." However, Excel files made via Microsoft Excel Starter can be linked by Inventor via Microsoft Excel, but not the other way around. | Inventor | Centerlines and center marks | Margherita | yes carl9940, but you have to use the punch tool in the modify panel on the Sheet Metal tab. Then, in the drawing you can use CM (center mark) to create a proper center mark. I've got another problem though, when I share a sketch and want to use points on the shared sketch, the punch tool doesn't pick up the points and keeps on giving me an error message saying 'No sketches are available. First create a sketch, then use the Hole Center tool to define the position of each Punch Tool'. But the thing is what in the world do they mean with "Hole Center" tool. That said I think having projected sketch geometry (in context of an assembly) be adaptive by default is a bad idea. Most new users have no idea what "adaptive" is and will make many, many adative sketch links which will slow down processing/updating for large assemblies. I suggest that adaptivity should be opted into by advanced users who are using it deliberately and not as a default option used by everyone and any one. | Inventor | Bill of Materials Editor | paul.normand | It is a faily simple process once you know the steps. Here is something you can try: 1. Edit the Parts List to add a MASS column. 2. Right-click the Mass column in your parts list and select Format Column.
3. Click on the Substitution tab and Enable Value Substitution.
4. Click the dropdown box, select "Browse Properties", and select Mass. 5. In the box "When rows are merged, Value used is", switch from "First Value" to "Sum of Values". Cheers,

| Inventor | Detail Views | paul.normand | The most efficient way to do this is to use a representation. A Detail view can use a View or Level of Detail representation that is different than the parent base view. For example, the Base View and Detail view are originally created from the assembly View rep named Master. Open the assembly file, create and name a new rep and turn off the visibility of the parts you do not want to appear. Save the assembly and return to the drawing. Edit the detail view to use the new rep. Cheers,

5. Click Ok to close the Display Appearance dialog box. 6/ Click OK to close the Applications Options dialog box.
Using the application setting, all documents, regardless of their individual settings, will use whatever the Application settings are for initial Visual Style display. | Inventor | Configuration | claudw | Hello hardwick_rp, In our Help about WikiHelp, we have the following explanation. "The Autodesk WikiHelp combines learning resources provided by Autodesk with knowledge from our vibrant user community." Think of WikiHelp as documentation (Help) about the products with the added bonus of the community. Peers can share information and our authors can add to the content. But, we are not a reseller or product support. That is why, sometimes, we redirect people to other resources where they can work with the correct experts to resolve issues. I hope this clarifies the issue. Regards,

| Inventor | Links and Resources | krish2 | thanks Bill great tip | Tue Jan 24, 2012 2:37 pm |
| Inventor | Links and Resources | bill.bogan@autodesk.com | Hi Krish2, you can create custom parameters using appropriate names for your purposes.
1. In the Manage tab, click Parameters. 2. In the Parameters dialog box, at the bottom left, click Add Numeric (or appropriate kind of parameter). 3. Give the parameter a name, value, etc. E.g. say that d0 is length. Name the parameter Length and specify the length value.
4. In the area above where parameters are listed, locate d0. In the Equation column, click the entry on the row matching d0. 5. At the right side of that field is an arrow > click that and then click List Parameters. 6. From the Parameters list, select Length. Length is now the parameter used for d0. 7. Repeat the process as many times as needed using the naming convention you prefer. Hope this helps.

| Inventor | Name and match iMates | CADtekk | I use Inventor 2012 SP1, WinXP64, i7, 24 Gigs, certified graphics, etc., etc.
iMates grab whatever is a matching constraint configuration. It does not matter what name the iMate is given and/or what name(s) are in the match list. I have tried all manner of naming conventions, numbers, ASCII, text, etc. to no avail. The iMate feature is deeply flawed and remains so. This nonsense has been going on since they were first introduced and continues even today with AIP2012.
I began using inventor consistently since Inventor 5 was released. I just stay away from them thar iMates all together because this issue remains unaddressed. For some real fun, try the option for "place component at all matching iMates" and you'll have a weed field of unwanted placements at every single similar constraint type, parts will even double up on already 'spent' iMates. | Inventor | Export drawing data to AutoCAD | patrick.miller | pekelney, Thanks for your feedback on this content. I updated the links in the "Note". Nearly all the content on this page also applies to dxf. The exceptions are the AutoCAD Mechanical and Inventor DWG information. When you export from IDW to DWG/DXF, all geometry that is visible in the drawing views is exported (including bend lines). You can turn off the visibility of bend lines before exporting. Alternatively, you can export the flat pattern from the sheet metal model (right-click Flat Pattern and Save Copy As). In the Options dialog, turn off the visibility of the IV_TANGENT, IV_BEND, IV_BEND_DOWN layers. Save this configuration for later use. See Export flat patterns procedure on the page below for more info on exporting flat patterns: http://wikihelp.autodesk.com/enu?adskContextId=REDIRECT_IDD_MB_DWGOUT_DLG&language=ENU&release=2012&product=Inventor Hope this helps.

| Inventor | Parameters in models | bill.bogan@autodesk.com | Thank you cellt2 for the feedback. We endeavor to provide the most precise help we can, but cannot account for every circumstance. If you click on the first procedure above (Use parameters in models), the first link under that discussion is a "Show me how to use parameters" video. Perhaps you can find pertinent information there. Additionally, you can use search to narrow the field of interest and exploration. Here's an example:
http://wikihelp-stg.autodesk.com/Spe...U&version=2012 Additionally, one Learning Experience goal is to continue to add video examples of key functionality, so we will add the request to the list. Thanks again,

| Inventor | What's New | driftwood | Yes, Paul & "Whunter", I agree TOTALLY!!!
And, while I realize that this is "off-topic", as "W" points out, it is actually relevant in that we are all here for the same purpose; to accomplish a task/goal. And, while the poor attitudes of some members might not directly interfere with that purpose, it certainly affects the overall atmosphere of this forum as well as our collective disposition. Actually, I have my own list of suppositions as to why some of these "one-line wonders" seem to be such miserable people and why they apparently enjoy being condescending and rude to others. However, I don't feel that it would be any more appropriate for me to express my thoughts as to their obviously impaired ability to successfully create more than one string of characters nor would it be constructive if I were to express my beliefs regarding the "wonderful" influence that innovations in communication such as texting has/have had on the degradation of their abilities to communicate in the written form. Suffice to say that this is a professional forum and professionalism, in all aspects of participation, would be greatly appreciated by other forum members, of course. Much more importantly though, and whether you regard the opinions of your online colleagues or your workplace colleagues to be important to you, consider that the good people at Autodesk that work very hard to provide a consistently reliable and robust family of products for your benefit, without which, you would likely not be able to produce a set of working documents that would reflect a level of quality even as "impressive" as that which you have demonstrated with regard to your written communication skills. Undoubtedly, you receive the benefit of their hard work and consideration on a regular basis through your use of the Autodesk family of products. And, while I don't like to "tell" others what they should/should not do, let me just suggest that it might behoove you to consider where you might be if the attitudes of the people engaged in reading your comments and improving the functionality of these tools that we all value so greatly were not dissimilar to your own. Sobering, isn't it? Chances are that (assuming, of course, that you complete your curriculum and, assuming that your father is as effective in helping you to procure an actual job by continuing to exert whatever influence he possesses that has obviously played a role in your arrival at this point in life), if you are successful in procuring a job, even an entry-level position within a professional practice firm, as you begin to interact with your superiors and/or your clients, you will likely realize that it is certainly not a requirement that people treat one another with mutual respect. But I believe that you will also find that it is definitely a concept that you will grow to appreciate more and more. And, after you have had the opportunity to "grow" in your new environment through finding yourself on the receiving-end of the arrogance and rudeness that you seem to be so fond of, you might even develop something called "empathy" (you can right-click to look-up it's meaning-but don't worry, it's not a disease, or anything like that). In any case, to all of the Autodesk employees that have worked so hard to enrich my life over the past 25 years, I would like to extend a big "Thank You!!!". And I, for one, along with "Paul" and "Whunter", would certainly like to express how thankful I am for all of your hard work but ALSO for your consistently professional, caring and sincerely concerned attitudes toward your work and toward the users of Autodesk products across the globe! And to everyone in this forum, I apologize for the length and the content of this post but I felt compelled as this is an ever-worsening problem online and elsewhere... | Sat Dec 10, 2011 3:53 pm |

| Inventor | Measurement units | bill.bogan@autodesk.com | The easiest way to make this switch is to 1. copy the millimeter templates from the Metric folder and paste them in the Templates folder that is one level higher, where you see Standard.ipt, Standard.iam etc. 2. delete the Standard templates from the Templates folder.
3. In the Templates folder, rename the copied metric templates to Standard.ipt, Standard.iam, etc.
That will make your millimeter templates the standard when use use the QAT tools for creating new documents. Hope that helps, Bill Bogan

After you create a table driven assembly, one of the tabs in the table is labeled Exclusion. This allows you to Include/Exclude components, constraints, etc. You can look up iAssemblies in the online help for more info. I also posted the handout for a class I taught at AU last year on iFeatures, iParts, and iAssemblies on my tips and tricks page. http://wikihelp.autodesk.com/index.php?title=Inventor/enu/Community/User_Pages/Paul_Normand%27s_Page_of_Tips Hope this gets you going and thanks for posting a comment.

| Inventor | Measurement units | ted.saufley@autodesk.com | raike94, Are you changing the units from inches to millimeters? if that's the case, why not begin a new part (or assembly) using one of the metric templates supplied with Inventor? That will save you the trouble of changing inches to millimeters for both part construction and dimensioning operations. And if you're using a different system of units, you can set up all the defaults according to your needs and then save the file in the Inventor Templates folder so that it will always be readily accessible to you. Provide a different name for your custom template so that you don't write over an existing template. Hope this helps. Ted Saufley

| Inventor | Measurement units | raike94@hotmail.com | Well.. This function and I doesnt seem to get along very well. Yeah, sure I can go to Tools and then change the units, but every time I open a new file the units switch back to "Inch". This is really getting to me if I'm making lots of files during a short period of time, since its an annoying procedure to change units constantly. I've tried to re-configure the program (Im on an educational version) but it still doesnt want to do my bidding :(
It would be really nice for future Inventor editions if you could PERMANENTLY change the units in "Tools > Units", since I recognize this pain in the neck all to well from Autodesk Inventor 2009.

| Inventor | Mass properties | bill.bogan@autodesk.com | After thinking about this during the day, if you are wanting to add a new material with it's physical properties, you need to use the Styles Editor. | Inventor | Object Defaults and Standards | kubicoi | Hello Mark,
Thank you for your question, and please excuse a delayed response. The style specified in Styles > Object Defaults is used as a default style for new annotations. For existing annotations, you can set a new style by using the Annotate tab > Format panel (this way you override the default style). The current style defined in Object Defaults corresponds to the By Standard item in the Annotate tab > Format panel > Styles list. Tip: You might want to look at the Home > Inventor > English2012 > Help > Show Me Animations > Show Me Animations > Drawings - Annotations > "Set defaults for sketch hatching" or "Hatching in drawing sketches" animation. | Inventor | Assembly components in patterns | jperry_ASC | Thanks for responding Bill,
I'm referring to the addition of new parts to the component pattern, not simply an adjustment of the pattern's iterations. For example, if I were to have a pattern set up with a screw and nut, but find that I forgot to include a washer. Is it possible to add that washer into the pre-existing screw-and-nut pattern? From what I can see, the program doesn't allow me to. The only recourse seems to be deleting the entire pattern and remaking it from scratch. My actual problem involved a series of linked patterns. Because I was unable to make an alteration to one of the patterns, I had to delete the entire set and start over. Is that really what's necessary? Joshua | Wed Nov 9, 2011 5:15 pm |

| Inventor | Edit Sketch Blocks | craig@1911.com.au | Hi,
I suspect most users of the tutorials (especially if it will not work for them) will follow them to the letter: That is where the problem is, the wording of line 8 is incorrect. It says “Hold down the Ctrl key, and click the four lines of the rectangle.” What it should say is select one of the four lines of the rectangle, then hold down the Ctrl key to select the other three. When all four lines are selected, right-click and select Add To Block. The video cannot clarify the problem either because it does not show the order of the key strokes and mouse clicks in relation to each other. As an aside, the Shift key will also perform the same function as the Ctrl key in this instance.

Can you provide some additional description? There is the ability to suppress individual instances (third item in procedures above) in the component pattern. | Inventor | Examine a Project | ted.saufley@autodesk.com | Dan,
To answer your question regarding the differences between Inventor and Fusion… Parametric modelers like Inventor leverage a history tree in constructing solid models. While this approach works well for the vast majority of modeling tasks, last minute design changes and conceptual work can sometimes be difficult. The direct modeling approach allows a user to change model geometry/topology without being restricted by a native model's existing parametric and/or history data, or an imported model's lack thereof. This makes direct modeling particularly useful for working with very complex native models or imported models. Think of Inventor Fusion as a hybrid of both parametric and direct modeling paradigms. While Fusion can certainly be used as a separate solid modeling application, its’ advantages are best realized when used in concert with Inventor (and also AutoCAD). Hope that helps. Be sure to check out the Fusion videos on our Wiki pages that Bill recommended. Cheers.

| Inventor | Examine a Project | dknelson_ballard | Hello Ted,
Thank you for clarifying that "Inventor Fusion" is not the same as "Inventor"...although I'm not clear what the differences are. I am a Novice AutoCAD user, and our Engineering Manager purchased an installation that included Inventor Fusion, so I was attempting to familiarize myself with it. I, too, was attempting to access Inventor tutorials and couldn't understand why Project Manager was not available from the "I" menu. After spending a number of hours trying to download and install tutorials and help files, (apparently not valid for my Fusion product), I resigned myself to advance through the tutorial...only to find your comment, above. Since I am not the first to encounter this con"fusion", maybe it makes sense to post a disclaimer on the main Inventor Tutorial page that these tutorials do not apply to the Fusion product. Could you give a brief explanation of what Fusion is designed to do (as opposed to the standard Inventor)? Are there comparable tutorials for the Fusion product? Thanks!

| Inventor | Application Options settings | JLLucas | I am looking for the option of turning on Full Help (offline help) all the time. From the installation instruction, it is said that offline help would be utilize when offline and wikihelp would be used when online, which I didn't think it would've worked, and I did not bother to try since I am in no mood of turning TCP/IP connection on and off just fro accessing offline As it turns out, I was right it Inventor kept trying to access wikihelp even when the site had been down yesterday (10/26/11). So, the question remains, regardless of whether the paragraph above was adding any information, how do you turn on the offline help and keep accessing it all the time? | Inventor | Part view representations | patrick.miller | You are correct that work feature visibility is supported in view representations and feature suppression is not. Work feature visibility is a display issue (like view orientation or part color) and can be included in a view representation. Feature suppression is a computation issue which affects more than just the display so it was not included in view representations. We have received this feedback from other users and are considering how to handle feature suppression with part DVR. The workaround currently is to use iParts to suppress features within a single part. Hopefully that could work for your situation. Patrick Miller

| Inventor | Part view representations | msmaxwell | If I'm not mistaken ... View Representations in parts do NOT give you control of "Feature" visibility. "Features" do not have a visibility option, but can be suppressed. Additionally, "Features" are not the same thing as "Work Features." View Representations DO give control of visibility of "work features" ... NOT "features." Why emphasize this distinction? I was looking to the View Representations in a part to show different states in a drawing for a single part. (eg. Turned dimensions, then add thread features, then add keyways.) It would have been nice to use that kind of functionality from a single part in a drawing just as Level of Detail Views work for assemblies. | Tue Oct 25, 2011 12:01 pm |

| Inventor | Specify Segment Rules | bill.bogan@autodesk.com | Hi Laurence,
If the tutorial does not require changing the other files, then there is no need to save them as they haven't changed. The save command knows the state of files in an assembly, if they have changed and not been saved, it will display "Yes" for those files. If a file has not changed there is no reason to save it.
If you cannot save the assembly, try using Save As and give it a new name. Otherwise, you will need to change the permissions on the tutorial files folder so you have write permission. Cheers,

Then return to this here and start with step 2. In the column to the left, you can see panel/page 3 (entitled Insert an iFeature), just click on that to go to the page and get started. | Inventor | Get Started | bill.bogan@autodesk.com | Hi spfurlong,
If you installed them, you may already have admin permissions or may not need those permissions. If so, you can go to the folder where the tutorial files are installed and right-click the folder, then set the Read-only property to Off (unchecked). Make sure the setting propagates to all sub-folders. Everything will be editable at that point. I'd recommend saving the files to names other than what you have when you open them. Maybe with your initials at the end. That way you always have the originals to start from when doing a refresher. Bill Bogan | MFG Learning Experience Team | Mon Oct 24, 2011 8:06 am |

| Inventor | About this tutorial | spfurlong | If you followed the install directions provided by autodesk for this tutorial (copied below), then the main folder in your windows explorer, 'tutorial files' is likely set to 'read only'. I had to go to the folder properties, and uncheck read-only for that folder, subfolder and files. This is important for the next steps in this tutorial in order to change the use style library to read-write when managing the active project. See step 3 on the next page to see what I'm talking about.
Am I the only one with this problem? Sorry if it's just my problem, or if I am introducing a no-no. "Windows Vista/Win 7:

| Inventor | Create a Contact Set | bill.bogan@autodesk.com | The resting position looks to be anchored after the first attempt to move it. I unchecked the resting position option and moved the piston. I then turned it back on and could move the piston, and the moment I let the cursor go (mouse button up) the piston snapped into the resting position. After that I could not move it again.
Not sure if this is "as designed" or "an issue" needing resolution. I will investigate further. Bill Bogan | MFG Learning Experience Team | Thu Oct 20, 2011 9:31 am |

Right click Last Mate in Browser under Piston
Edit
Select Use offset as resting position
Maximum selected and set to 10 mm
Minimum selected and set to 0 mm
Ok
And the piston is locked on the end face of the Cylinder Head Cover- Back
Redo steps to get to Edit Constraint dialogue,
Uncheck Use offset as resting position
Keep Maximum at 10 mm and Min at 0 mm
OK
Piston is limited to 10 mm offset from end face of the Cylinder Head Cover- Back

| Inventor | Insert and Constrain a Subassembly | bill.bogan@autodesk.com | Initially, it looks like the difference between a Mate and a Flush constraint. But without working through it myself that is only a guess. I will try this in a little while to see what I can find out. Cheers,

| Inventor | Create a Contact Set | bill.bogan@autodesk.com | The difference between the two lies in the additional things you can do with the constraint command. You can create transitional constraints, motion constraints, and apply limits. The Assemble command applies constraints, but only those relative to putting components together.
More discussion on the additional constraint capability is here: http://wikihelp.autodesk.com/enu?adskContextId=REDIRECT_IDD_UC_GEOM_SELECTION_DLG&language=ENU&release=2012&product=Inventor Cheers,

| Inventor | Insert a 2D Part and Constrain to a Solid | bill.bogan@autodesk.com | Hi gezildire,
When saving an assembly you are presented with a list of its dependent components and the opportunity to save these. This allows you to save/migrate any changed or dependent components to the newest release in the same action. Note, though, it is usually best to migrate your data with a new release. You might want to look at Task Scheduler for accomplishing migration in a convenient way.
